The religious fanatics and hypocrites may try, but ultimately the human spirit triumphs, even in pockets of fear and darkness.  Enjoy.

 Movie recommendation for Oscar night
2/24/08  07:27:39

Confession:  I haven’t seen most of the movies nominated for top honors tonight.

An even more embarrassing confession:  I don’t want to.

But here’s a recommendation that comes from the heart:  In the Valley of Elah. This brilliant, shamefully underrated film is one of the most powerful anti-war movies I’ve seen in years, probably since The Deerhunter, but without the overwrought sensationalism.  Valley is understated, brilliant, beautifully acted, and features an ending so surprising and brave that those of us who oppose this atrocious, shameful war should throw a ticker tape parade for director Paul Haggis.  Give Tommy Lee that Oscar he so richly deserves tonight, and let’s rid ourselves of the memory of Mr. Jones accepting the statuette for The Fugitive, which was the awards version of a mercy fuck.

It’s too bad that these Iraq movies have tanked at the box office; let’s see if we can reverse that trend.  Rent this movie now.

 Where I’ve been
2/24/08  07:20:10

In case you didn’t know, I’ve been working out my blogging chops at No Quarter for the past few weeks.  Visit early and often. And now that I’ve worked the kinks out I’m ready to go here at home.
